Photographers never have enough photos of themselves with their kids. Since we’re the ones with the camera, it can be challenging to be represented in your family’s photographic history. That’s why we need to hand the camera over to another photographer occasionally and let them get the job done for us (You can find Kristin’s photography page here.) I love when photographers–and Moms in general!–realize that they will want to have photos of themselves with their kids when they were little. You will want them for you, and your kids will also want them too. I don’t have nearly enough photos of myself with my Mom. We are an important part of our children’s history. It’s their heritage, a photographic history we get to pass on to them.

I’m usually photographing little kids, so when I get to photograph big ones, it’s always diverting. See, teenagers, actually respond to requests without bribery and trickery (at least when you’re the photographer and not their parent, haha!) Jasmine isn’t much of a kid anymore though. I’ve gotten to watch her grow up for the past several years, and she’s become quite the lady. If you’ve been a client of mine in the past couple of years, chances are she probably watched my kids while I worked at my computer on some of your photos. Now, she’s graduating and the world will struggle to contain her awesomeness. Congratulations, Jasmine. Keep on shining, beautiful.

I know I have a lot of favorite things about being a photographer, but one of my very favorites is getting to catch up with families from time to time and see how little kids have turned into bigger kids or, in this case, how a mysterious little bump (that was still a secret to the world the last time I saw them) has become an adorable little boy! This is the second time, I’ve gotten to photograph this beautiful family while they’ve been vacationing in our gorgeous desert from a colder place in another state. We got to recreate some images, and invent some new ones, and modify others. This time when Colton jumped in the pool at the end of our session, he had the company of his little brother.

Saying another goodbye to some clients who have been in my life for several years. The first time I photographed them, the little guy was a newborn. And now, they’re heading off to start another adventure in a new place. But they’ll always have these photos of the desert (and the other sessions in previous years that we’ve done in their awesome mid-century modern home), to remind them of where their family started and grew into the foursome it is today. And their story continues… I’m glad I got to help them preserve part of it. <3
