When you hear “family photo session,” what do you think? Most clients are used to photo sessions that focus on getting everyone to look at the camera and smile, sessions shot in a pretty outdoor location. Those types of photos are awesome and I want them as much as the next family. But I also love documentary photographs that capture children and families in their natural environment, photographs that capture tidbits of real life.

DelaLane Photography {Day in the Life} sessions areΒ  a different take on the typical “family photo session,” sessions designed to focus specifically on family photojournalism — telling a story through photos about this present time in your family’s history. They take place in your home and require nothing from you aside from being yourselves. This is a great option for families with small children especially. Who hasn’t been frustrated trying to get the perfect photo of your 2 or 3 year old sitting still and smiling at the camera? This is an alternative that allows children to be in their own space, with their own things, having fun. There is so much beauty in capturing the personalities and relationships that grow within the confines of your home. It’s personal, low stress, and completely unique to you. And best of all it’s memory-preserving.

A beautiful portrait can preserve a moment in time, a session like this can preserve an era. Instead of just helping you remember what you looked like (and what your kids looked like), it will help you remember details about their development, personalities, lives. How quickly forget our children’s passing quirks and phases, the things that frustrate us and make us laugh.

Capture it. Put it in a coffee table book or album. Take the images now so that you have them in the future when it’s harder to remember what it used to be like. Time is irreplaceable. We get one shot at it and our brains can’t store it all.

I don’t technically make “New Year’s Resolutions,” but one of my goals this year is to get back into taking more photos of the everyday moments I spend with my kids. That is what got me into this business to begin with. It’s how DelaLane Photography was born. It’s my first love and it’s something I want very much to share with our clients.

I’ve had the joy of working with this family 3 times in the past couple of months. A maternity session, a newborn session (yet to be blogged) and in between the two, this. I have been wanting to get into birth photography since the very beginning. Like so many photographers, I love it all, but babies (and little ones) are my passion. I can say without any hesitation that the birth of my two children were two of the very best days of my life, even in the midst of the most intense pain and most extreme exhaustion I’ve ever felt. There is nothing like having a baby. Getting to wed so many of my passions – babies, births, families, photojournalism, photography – into one experience was such a blessing for me. And I couldn’t have asked for a sweeter family to share the experience with, documenting for them “the best day” of their lives, capturing moments they wouldn’t have been able to see otherwise, creating a photo heritage of a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will commemorate a brand new soul’s first day every time they are poured over and enjoyed. Someday Reece will get to relive her first breaths, her parents’ reaction to her arrival, her Grandparents’ joy, her birthday. How can a person not think that is the coolest thing EVER? I definitely do. If my schedule allowed, I would shoot births all the time. What a huge BLESSING to be a part.

  • Jan Ingersoll - Hi Amanda, You certainly accomplished what you set out to do. I have known these kids for years and I am sitting here in tears! It is sensitive and beautiful, tasteful and respectful at the same time. Loved it.ReplyCancel

This was one of those awesome days when I found something unexpected in a familiar location and lucked out that I happened to be photographing a sweet family who was willing to humor me and go fro a short hike to take advantage… of a huge patch of bright green clover that had sprouted in the middle of the high desert.

This is the third year I’ve photographed this family and I absolutely love getting to see how the kids have grown up each year we get together. Yup, still as cute as ever.

Happy 3 Months, Kennedy! I know your Daddy will always appreciate having these photos of you when you were little and he was deployed. I bet he’s also appreciating that he’s no longer deployed and gets to watch you grow up in person. πŸ˜‰ What a precious girl you are.

We squeezed in this last-minute session so that Sylvia could make sure she had photos of her hubby during his long deployment, which was coming up way too quickly. They had never had professional photos taken of themselves as a couple. We remedied that.

When I asked them about the things that define them as a couple, they mentioned their doggies who came along (with friends to watch them while we were shooting the second half of the session), the Marine Corps, their fun-loving attitudes (evident!), and sugar. So we paid a little homage to the Marine Corps and then we gave tribute to sugar by setting up a little picnic of Twinkies and Coke for them to enjoy. Then we finished off the session enjoying one of Sylvia’s talents, the guitar.

Β Thank you so much for your service to our country, Jordan & Sylvia! Praying the time is passing quickly, that your reunion is a sweet one, and that these photos helped get you through.
