This was one session that seems like 2 sessions. When you get a couple of photographers together, we tend to be ambitious. When you’ve shot hundreds of sessions for other families, you have lots of ideas about what might be fun for your own. And this was a fun session. The year before this one, in 2013, my friend Mandy (and fellow photographer of Amanda Kay Photography) came up with an idea that resulted in what is probably my most viewed session of all time, the Holi Powder session. She had an equally exciting plan for me in 2014 when we spent some time under the trees, followed by an adventure in canoes on the middle of a big lake by UW, camera and all, and finishing the evening with some frozen yogurt.

If you follow my blog, you know that I’ve been trying to limit my blogs to 12 photos a session. I’m teaching myself some decisiveness. After nearly 6 years in business, it is still painful learning to not overshare… too painful for this session, so I doubled up and gave you 24… since it was really 2 sessions on the same day. I’m okay with it. 🙂

Four of the last 6 years, we’ve managed to get together in the summer time and photograph each other. It’s a tradition I’m sure will continue whenever we’re able to get our families together in the same state. I can’t express how grateful I am for all the photos Mandy has taken of my family. Precious memories from the time our now 6-year-old was a 1-year-old. Here are a couple of favorites of my girl and I, from the first session Mandy shot for us in 2011, and one from 2014, the day before I shot this session for them. I should tell you, I just wasted (well, not wasted… enjoyed) a half hour I didn’t intend to spend, looking through all our AKP sessions. There are literally hundreds of images I wanted to post, but for the sake of time I’ll stick with my first instinct and share these two. I love side-by-sides age progressions. That is the value of a family session every year. They preserve the changes, giving a Momma’s heart little bittersweet pangs, for the little ones they used to be, and the bigger ones they’re becoming. It’s a beautiful thing.

When I first moved to this desert, I thought is was desolate. There was a period of adjustment. I missed seasons. In some ways I still do, but after 9 years here I have come to realize, though the seasons here don’t look like they do in the Northwest or in the Northeast, they exist here as much as anywhere. Though the landscape here may appear barren, there is life hidden everywhere. You might have to look a little harder to find it, but the victory of discovery is grand because there is a quest. This is a land to explore. The variations in seasons and the beauty of these dry Southern California Mountains are more subtle, but they are more resilient. Life here conquers in a triumphant way not necessitated where rain comes easily. Green pushes up out of the ground, suddenly and dramatically, if you catch it just right. No where is the profound power of a little water and a lot of sunshine more on display than in the high desert.

We caught it just right this day when we celebrated this beautiful baby boy as a beautiful baby bump. <3

Happy Birthday to these two cousins, who just turned one! Their family put together a barnyard-themed party complete with live animals…ponies to ride, chickens to chase, bunnies and turtles and baby goats to pet. Adorable cake, and treats all appropriately-themed, a photo backdrop with barn doors and bales of hay, and assorted props and cowboy hats…the whole nine! A complete farm, party-style. It is amazing to me what some Moms can pull off, and then still be present, and put together, and enjoy it all. (Clarissa, you’re amazing!)

Yee-haw, little ones. Here’s to many more!

My client turned friend, Meagan, never ceases to amaze with her creative visions. After over 2 years and photographing her family 9 times (if I count correctly?), she always has something a little different for me. And whatever she has in mind for her babies’ sessions is always beautiful. Bab-IES **plural** because she’s about to pop any day with a second baby girl, Reece’s little sister. Yay! This particular session, Reece’s 6 month session, about a year a half ago, was one of the most prop-laden sessions we’ve attempted, and it was also one of the more challenging sessions I’ve had with any baby. I think we got just about every emotion out of Reece during the hour we were together. We ended up abandoning our plans and letting Reece eat and power nap, right there in the middle of the park, probably for a good 20-30 minutes while the sun kept setting, because she had needs and they needed to be met. When she woke up, she was a new baby and we were able to crank out the whole session in half the time. Moving double-time, it all worked out in the end. Babies are always the boss during sessions. It’s something I embrace about baby and child photography. They keep you guessing and make you adjust. And I love solving them and all their little puzzles. This evening has a fond place in my memories. We did what we had to do, and we made it work. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Meagan and I make a good team. And babies are just darn cute.

Can’t wait to meet baby #2 and do it all over again. Love you guys!

xoxo
